Canadian Mental Health Association

The Canadian Mental Health Association Thompson is committed to continuing the implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples as a framework for guiding our services and supporting employment, education and training, housing and programs such as the Connections Clubhouse, Psychosocial Rehabilitation, Gardening Together, Nutritional Programs, Self-Help programs and more. With the collaboration of community partners, our services promote individual recovery, self-empowerment and connection to Indigenous culture and teachings.

We continue to pursue growth for our staff through education on the legacy of residential schools, it’s impact on Indigenous peoples today and the paths to reconciliation. Staff are given learning opportunities which includes conferences, online training sessions, and applicable events such as National Indigenous Peoples Day. We also continue to pursue growth for our participants by incorporating cultural teachings into our programming as well as providing education and resources when needed.

Lobbying for funding and resources for the Thompson Homeless Shelter and Project Northern Doorway remains a high priority as important supports in the community, where these facilities offer supports, resources and connections to supports within the community, to allow to success and growth for individuals.

Recognizing that the majority of individuals who access these supports identify as Indigenous, CMHA continues to ensure these services remain culturally appropriate and empower individuals to manage their own wellness and recovery.

With the current state of the world, and the growing demands on mental health, we would not have been able to keep up with the demanding mental health needs without the collaboration of community partnerships and stakeholders. Now, more than ever, those supports are appreciated. From providing rides to the Cold Weather facility (KTC), to organizations helping individuals get back to their home communities (MKO), the SHIPP program (YWCA) helping provide housing for participants experiencing homelessness and at greater risk to COVID-19 exposure and reducing the influx at the shelter and anonymous donations of food and personal protective gear; we thank you.
