Government of Manitoba

Economic Development: Manitoba has taken steps to promote economic reconciliation, particularly to support post COVID-19 recovery of Indigenous and northern communities. For example, $1 million in financial support was recently provided to key economic development activities related to Manitoba’s forestry, fishery and transportation sectors.

Child Welfare: The Manitoba Government continues to implement the Child Welfare Transformation Plan, to reduce the number of Indigenous children in care and achieve better outcomes for children. Since reaching a high point in 2017, the number of children in care has seen a consistent yearly decrease, with an 8.6 percent decrease from 2017-2020.

Education: Manitoba is working to eliminate education and employment gaps between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people by releasing Better Education Starts Today (BEST) Strategy which incorporates Indigenous priority actions.

Language and Culture: Manitoba continues to support the preservation and celebration of Indigenous languages and cultural practices through the Manitoba Aboriginal Languages Strategy (MALS) and Manitoba’s Culture Policy and Action Plan.

Health: Manitoba’s development of the Indigenous Partnership Strategic Framework (IPSF) included earlier work informed by engagement with Indigenous community health leadership. This work is ongoing and will contribute to closing the gap in health outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous populations.

Justice: Manitoba is working to eliminate the over-representation of Indigenous youth and adults in the justice system, continuing to utilize the Criminal Justice Modernization Strategy to guide necessary changes to modernize the criminal justice system. As an example, through this strategy, and other initiatives within the Restorative Justice Branch and across the department, there has been an increase in the use of diversions and alternatives to custody.
