The Thompson Regional Airport was host to Canadian Armed Forces and the Royal Canadian Air Force as part of the intensive campaign to deliver vaccines and COVID-19 care to remote First Nations in Canada. The airport served as a hub for coordinating operations and deliveries across Manitoba, highlighting Thompson’s importance as a logistical hub for the northern Manitoba.

Though passenger traffic from outlying communities has reduced due to the pandemic, the airport’s role as a service hub for northern Manitoba continues to grow, with a 30% increase in the volume of freight being transported through the airport.

Though the pandemic has created delays in the development of the Thompson Regional Airport’s new terminal, the project remains ongoing and aims to include opportunities to showcase northern culture and artisans as the first point of contact for visitors arriving in Thompson by air from around the world.
